Southampton Saison Deluxe
As previously noted, I am a big fan of saisons–I’m also a fan of the Southampton Brewery, especially their Double White Ale. And now, I am pleased to report that I am a fan of their Saison Deluxe! This 750ml bottle pops loudly, and pours with equal fervor: my first two pours are almost entirely foam/head, which is my only complaint, because my first two pours were basically flat. BUT once the gods of carbonation calmed themselves, this was an easy pour. The beer is golden and the head milky-white, with a long life. Though my allergies are currently in attack-mode, I can assure that the aroma is woodsy and spicey, with hints of citrus and clove. The carbonation is obviously active and dances on your tongue, while citrus hops compete with Turbinado sugar-like sweetness. Once the sweetness fades, in the finish there are hints of alcohol, but what you mostly experience is a tango with woodsy, almost floral hops and dry, bready funkiness vying for your attention.
Ultimately, at 7.5% abv this a perfect beer to share with others. I recommend not pairing it with nothing at all, to savor the experience with your closest loved ones who will no doubt find this beer enjoyable, or at least interesting. If you want to pair it with food, I’d suggest it with light seafood or your favorite cheese and crackers.
Cheers!
