The Bruery Saison de Lente
I love a good saison. As Garrett Oliver wrote in The Brewmaster’s Table, a good saisons is perfect any time of year, and with any food. This is a good saison. It pours with a foamy white head, and an airy aroma of piney floral hops, with a touch of the funk inherent to Brettanomyces yeast. There is a hoppy bitter kick right off the bat, with enough spices for a rum cake. Alcohol is somewhat apparent through the bright, active carbonation. The finish gets slightly sour, and bready–finally the aftertaste stays dry and hoppy, and leaves you with a bit of funk on your tongue.
As noted, you’d be hard pressed to find something this beer doesn’t pair well with. It’s a bit funkier than some examples, such as the Dupont Saison–beginners should start there, those wishing to get into the funky beer scene would be hard pressed to find a better starting point.
