Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Imperial Helles Lager

The second from Sierra Nevada’s 30th Anniversary series is an Imperial Helles Lager, courtesy of Charlie Papazian, Fred Eckhart and Ken Grossman – Charlie and Fred being pioneers of homebrewing.  After the anniversary stout I am expecting big and bold, however, this lager delivers an example of tradition and quality.  Ultimately though it’s not anything too exciting.

The aroma is faint, with a touch of honey and pumpkin.  The initial flavor is sweet with honey and mild grassy hops.  The body is medium thickness with light carbonation that fades quickly.   there is some alcohol taste, tasting around 8%.

It’s a great Imperial Lager with a slightly lighter flavor and color than a dopplebock.  It’s not my cup of tea but this would make a good pair with a summer lunch of cheese and spreads.
